Workday: Whoopee Rebuild

The rebuilding of Whoopee has begun with crew of CAMBA volunteers taking a saturday in the hot sun to start digging in the trail. It was 88 degrees out there, but the crew did some corridor clearing and solid tread work on the Upper (west) reroute that will connect the pieces of singletrack that were orphaned by the logging efforts, in an attempt to make a loop system that will stay ahead of the next round of logging. The intensive logging is to clear trees infected with pine beetles.
Thanks to the crew of Scott, Rita, Wayne, Jordan, Cecily, Shane, Douglas, Arthur, Rocky, Patrick, Steve, Jill, and Chris. In a poll of attendees, we found most were there due to hearing about the workday at the recent CAMBA meeting at Double Mountain, very few had decided to come due to the email list messages. How would you prefer to hear about workdays?

Whoopee Workday

Where: Whoopee Trail, about a mile past the top parking area. If you are not familiar with this, a caravan will be leaving from the parking area near China Gorge at 8:30. Look for the white Sportsmobile Camper Van along Elder Road.

Why: To start the reconstruction of the missing piece of the Whoopee trail.

We will be grubbing, clearing corridor and starting tread work. Tools needed are pulaskies, mcleods, shovels, grub hoes, axes, loppers, saws, etc.

Please bring water or the beverage of your choice, sunscreen, and wear closed-toe-shoes and long pants - there is poison oak in this area! We will be working for about 4 hours, and it will likely be a warm day, so be prepared.

Please note that this is private land and if you are cross posting this notice, we are NOT supposed to publish the location of this trail - ask your friends to meet you early and bring them up. (And please, by all means, ask your friends!)

The whole story:
The forest had a beetle infestation and the owners decided to do some massive logging in order to remove the infected trees. Many parts of the trail were obliterated - one chunk was turned into a logging road. CAMBA has signed an MOU with the land owners and are working to re-develop this trail while following the owner's few and reasonable requests. By putting in a sustainable trail now, even using large patches of clearcut, in a few years we will have a spectacular wooded trail nearby. More details will be available from your crewleaders at 9am as we get ready to hit the trail.

Post Canyon Cleanup Day Report

Volunteers kept showing up for the Post Canyon cleanup - someone may have been able to count noses, but it wasn't me. The photo on the Hood River News site the day before probably assisted, but this workday is normally well attended. The newspaper said:

Who did it? Someone dumped this pile of trash and debris in the middle of Post Canyon Road. The crime is known as Offensive Littering, and is punishable by fines and/or jail time. Anyone with information on this or other illegal dumping is encouraged to call Hood River County's non-emergency dispatch at: (541) 386-2711.
My cleanup partner & I found a trove where someone had dumped their household trash over the embankment, and we arduously hauled the scattered garbage uphill to the road edge for the truck pickup. While gathering, I came across a prescription pill bottle, with the owner's name and address on it. We took photos in situ and turned them and the evidence over to the sherriff. Folks, if you're going to break the law, don't leave a calling card. Better still, don't be a jerk.

Cows at Hospital Hill

This is from Ann McDonald: The cows are in at Hospital Hill 4/6/09. Please don't park at the corral during this time period. Today 5 cars parked there even with all the cattle rigs in sight. It really annoyed the Kreps. We want to be able to ride while the cows are in the pasture, so let all your friends know to not park there right now! Also, they have posted no dogs during this period. Thanks.

Let me repeat: NO DOGS ALLOWED ON HOSPITAL HILL until the cow moving is done. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE respect this, or you will get dogs and/or bikes banned from Kreps land.

Have fun riding. The trails are in fantastic shape!

Mt Hood Wilderness update and history

Hi Everyone,

I've been hearing rumors and getting questions about the passage in the Senate of the Omnibus Public Land Management Act of 2009, which includes Lewis and Clark Mt Hood Wilderness Act of 2007. There seems to be some confusion over what is and isn't in this proposal, so I thought I'd try to clarify. Over the past 5 years, folks from CAMBA, COTA, PUMP and IMBA have worked in 4 different versions of a Wilderness proposal for Mt Hood. With each successive version (and, like now, more than one version may be "active"), the maps change and it is confusing keeping track- there are lots of questions about the details of this particular version.
